“They Shall Not Grow Old” Wins MPSE Golden Reel Award For Best Documentary Sound Editing

The Peter Jackson World War 1 documentary They Shall Not Grow Old has won a Golden Reel Award for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing in a feature documentary. It was tied with Free Solo.

The awards by the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) had their 66th ceremony yesterday. Other winners included A Quiet Place and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.

The film, which has become the most successful U.S. Fathom Event of all time and has subsequently been given a nationwide theatrical release, uses narrations of World War 1 veterans over restored footage from British trenches. Additionally, Jackson’s team at Wingnut Films recreated noises from machines used in the war with help of the New Zealand Army and memorabilia Jackson owned.

The process of creating those sounds and other features of They Shall Not Grow Old are documented in a 30-minute Making Of narrated by Jackson which plays at the end of all domestic theatrical presentations of the film.

The film was also nominated for a BAFTA award. It didn’t qualify for an Academy Award as it missed the filling deadline of October 1 and having premiered in 2018 makes the film ineligible for next year’s Academy Awards as well.

They Shall Not Grow Old is now playing in theaters nationwide in 2D and 3D.
