Today, Kevin Feige confirmed through answers to ComicBook.Com and ScreenRant that Avengers: Endgame would be rereleased in theaters with additional footage. He didn’t mention how long the footage would be, but a listing on Cinemark has the answer.
The listing for a show titled “Avengers: Endgame – With Bonus Content” is exactly 188 minutes long and scheduled to be released on June 28.
The original theatrical release of the film was exactly 3 hours and 57 seconds long – or 182 (sometimes listed as 181) minutes. According to the synopsis on Cinemark’s site, which normally comes from the studio, this version includes “7 minutes of bonus content & [a] Stan Lee tribute”.
June 28 and that synopsis align with what Feige told ComicBook.Com, which is that the release would come next weekend. Feige elaborated later and told ScreenRant that the bonus content would all be after the credits and feature “a deleted scene, a little tribute, and a few surprises”.
So to clarify: the movie itself will remain the same, it will merely include around 7 minutes of bonus content after the credits.
Since June 28 is the official Friday release day, you can expect shows of the new version with bonus content on the Thursday night prior, June 27.
Some theaters had already scheduled shows for Endgame past June 28, so double-check when booking you tickets that the version of the show you’re booking is indeed 188 minutes long and not 181 if you intend to see the new bonus content. Tickets should go on sale around Monday or Tuesday mornings, which is when theaters usually release showtime information for the following week.
Previous rereleases of this nature have grossed some money, but it’s not certain it’ll be enough to make Avengers: Endgame the highest-grossing movie of all time. Avatar‘s 2010 rerelease grossed a solid $10 million in the U.S., but Endgame needs over $40 million to beat that film’s worldwide record. However, if Disney decides to also rerelease the film internationally (which is unclear right now) chances would look better, as Avatar’s 2010 rerelease was able to gross over $20 million overseas.
But regardless of any record (and given that both movies are owned by the same studio either way), audiences will be able to enjoy a rerelease of the most successful movie of the year with a few minutes of extras attached in less than 10 days.
